I started my journey into metalsmithing a few years back, when my other passions that I had just seemed to fizzle out, and I felt no fulfillment in my life. When I took a class on silversmithing, it was a breath of fresh, creative air. Making things with my hands is an incredibly rewarding experience.
When I was young I never thought that I would be able to make my own metal necklace or rings. Now I feel completely confident that I can make what I want — okay, maybe not completely confident, but I know that with a little elbow grease and a few curse words, I can do it eventually.
Metalsmithing is a great way to achieve zen. If you try to rush through it, you will just end up angry and disappointed. Keeping yourself centered is crucial, especially when you’re trying new techniques, soldering, setting stones or doing pretty much anything. It shouldn’t scare you off. Instead, it should inspire you to pick up your jewelers saw and clear your mind of all the riff raff.
